What's stealing the light from our oceans?

Jonas Mayer

Coastal waters are darkening, with drastic consequences for marine life and the fishing industry. We explore what’s causing our once clear coastal waters to go murky.

SYNOPSIS

In this Living Planet deep dive, we follow the story of Claas Wollna, the last permanent fisherman in Stralsund, Germany, as we uncover the global phenomenon of coastal ocean darkening. From murky lagoons to jellyfish-filled fjords, scientists explore how algae, organic matter, and sediment are dimming coastal waters, threatening marine life, fisheries, and our climates. A richly reported journey into an urgent, yet little-known environmental crisis.

BIOGRAPHY

Jonas Mayer is an environmental and climate reporter. He works across all genres and platforms, ranging from 30-second TikTok videos to 30-minute podcast episodes. In his work, he tries to connect detail with the big picture, sensory experiences with scientific facts, and human stories with politics, economics, and societal change.
